You’ll use a simple template to write a one-sentence “positioning statement” for your course explaining how your course is different from other options.
The basic template is:
[Course] is [Adjective] than other options because [Attribute]
- “Course” is your course name or just “my course”.
- “Adjective” is a specific way in which your course is superior to other options, e.g., “easier”.
- “Attribute” is some aspect of your course or its approach that explains its advantage.
👣 Steps
- Review your promise description, particularly the “result”. Think about what is (or could be) distinctive about how you’ll help people get that result, e.g. unique tactics, tools, processes, etc. These are potential unique attributes.
- Now review your target market description, particularly the “obstacle”. Does thinking about how your course could neutralise this obstacle give you any additional ideas for unique attributes?
- Consider the specific advantages each attribute provides for the target market. For example, making the result “easier”, “faster”, “more reliable”, “less stressful”, “more comprehensive”, etc.
- Choose an advantage + attribute that is compelling and could reasonably be incorporated into your course. Then describe it using the template above.

- If your course will teach an existing process (e.g., one you already use with clients) look for aspects that could be considered unique or distinctive.
- If you’re struggling to identify or devise a unique attribute for your course, consider the unique experience of its creator (i.e., you.) Ideally though, you’ll have a unique advantage as well as your own credibility.
