đź“‹ Instructions
You’ll use a simple template to create a one-sentence “promise” that describes what your course helps its target market to achieve.
The basic template is:
[Course] helps [Group] to [Results] so that [Reason]
- “Course” is your course name or just “my course”
- “Group” is the group from your market description, e.g., “stressed parents”
- “Results” is a short description of the result your course delivers
- “Reason” is your target market’s deeper reason for wanting the results
👣 Steps
- Review your list of relevant results from the previous assignment
- Pick a result based on your instincts about which will be most appealing to your market (and that you feel confident to deliver). If possible, reach out to friendly contacts in your target market to get some feedback.
- Based on your existing knowledge of the market, try to identify the underlying “reason” that underpins their goal and would make the result appealing
- Using the four-part template, draft a promise for your course.
👇 Examples
Here are the examples from the lesson:
- Effortless Selling helps sales-squeamish small business owners to build and maintain a pipeline of promising prospects so that they can grow their business and finally feel good about selling.
- Crypto Mastery helps part-time investors understand the fundamentals of cryptocurrency investing so that they can make safer investments and build wealth for the future.
- Email Marketing Jumpstart helps people who love writing to become certified in email marketing so that they can attract freelance clients and earn money from their passion.
- The Disruptive Diet helps overweight, middle-aged men permanently change their relationship with food so that they can lose weight, look great and live longer.
đź’ˇ Tips
- If your best result doesn’t align neatly with one of the four result types, that’s fine. Use whatever emphasis and wording seems the most compelling to you (and preferably gets a positive response from people in your target market).
- Try to stick to just one main result to begin with. Afterwards you can add another as long as it doesn’t dilute the promise or greatly broaden the scope of the course.
- Try not to cram too much into this statement – around 20 to 40 words in total is the best range. As in other assignments, clarity and simplicity are key.
