📋 Instructions
Using a simple framework, you’ll create a one-paragraph description of an imaginary but believable student for your course.
You can include any attributes that help bring them to life for you, but here’s what I recommend as a starting point:
- First name
- Age
- Occupation
- Location
- Likes and dislikes
- Fears and frustrations
You can also find a photo to represent this person and add a sentence or two of “back story” to explain why they joined your course.
👇 Examples
Here are some examples of completed target market descriptions:
- “Kelly is a 24-year old graphic designer from Cleveland. She loves playing board games with her friends and family, and dreaming up ideas for games of her own. She dislikes social media and hates having her photo taken. Sometimes she worries that she’s not fully pursuing her passions and gets frustrated when her clients don’t like her visual ideas. She’s created the prototype for an original board game but imposter syndrome is holding her back from launching it.”
- “Jack is a 42-year old sales coach from London. He likes playing soccer and watching shows like Narcos on Netflix. He dislikes high-pressure sales techniques and insincere people. Deep down he worries he’ll never get the recognition he deserves in his industry and gets frustrated when people don’t “get” what he does. Clients are always telling him he should use his experience to write a nonfiction book, but he never seems to find the time.”
- “Lekshmy is a 35-year old yoga instructor from Sydney. She loves her work and the positive impact she has on her clients, but hates how crowded the yoga ‘industry’ has become. She worries that her business doesn’t generate enough income to save for the future and gets frustrated when her family tells her she needs a “proper job”. Since the pandemic, she’s heard of several instructors having success with Zoom-based yoga classes and has recently decided she needs to look into this option more seriously.”
💡 Tips
Here are some additional tips:
- Don’t feel constrained by my suggested format. Any description of up to 100 words that brings your Student Zero to life is just fine.
- To find a photo to attach to your mini-avatar, search on Google Images or use this search on Unsplash
- If you already have a customer avatar for your business, feel free to adapt it for this assignment.
- Remember, if the group buying your course is different to the one taking your course, create a mini avatar for the one who’ll be your students.
