Hey there. It’s Glen again. I’ve got a new lesson for you and this one’s called: 7 Possible Missions You Can Choose.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
- The 7 “missions” an online course can help you achieve
- The relative difficulty of each mission
- How each mission works in practice
Not all of these missions will apply to you, but it’s valuable for you to see the full range.
We’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s jump straight in.
The first mission is Attract Your Avatar and the objective is generating new leads for your business.
I talked about this in the previous module and it’s one of the easiest missions to pull off.
Basically, you create a mini course that delivers a quick win and you give people access in exchange for their email address.
And I’m including this mission because it’s a great way to generate leads for your main course.
The next mission is Streamline Your Service and the objective is to deliver your existing service in a more efficient way to free up more time.
Difficulty-wise I would say it’s easy to medium, depending on how far you take it.
If you run a service business like coaching or consulting, where you work with clients one-to-one, some parts of your process are probably the same for everyone.
So if you can package up the common parts of your process into an online course, then you can delegate some of your process to the course material.
So you might say: “Before our next session, take a look at module 2, and do the assignments, and we’ll discuss it when we meet”.
The next mission is called Extend Your Reach and the objective is creating a course to sell to prospects you can’t easily serve right now. In terms of difficulty it’s probably medium.
So let’s say your core offer is a coaching package with sessions you deliver over a period of several weeks or months. Since clients get a lot of 1:1 attention, those types of packages usually have a higher price tag.
Inevitably, some people will want to work with you, but don’t have the budget.
However, if you create an online course that’s a self-service version of what you do but at a lower price point then you now have a way to help those people.
And once they get to know you through your course, they may decide to hire you anyway, to help with specific areas they’re struggling with.
The next mission is Automate Your Income and the objective is creating an entirely passive revenue stream. It’s definitely one of the harder missions but certainly not impossible.
The idea is that once it’s up and running, people can discover your course, buy it, and get results, all with very little ongoing input from you.
Obviously most people love the sound of this mission. It’s the internet version of the goose that lays those golden eggs.
In practice though, several things need to be working just right to create a truly passive and profitable revenue stream.
But even if only some parts of your ecosystem are passive, it can still provide a good monthly income that only takes a few hours a week to maintain.
The next mission is called Start Your Side Hustle and this is where you create a course to sell on the side based around a passion or interest that you have. It’s probably medium difficulty.
Usually you’ll pick a market you’re already immersed in. So for example, you’re active in relevant communities, you’ve bought products, and so on.
And typically, your course would teach people to get a result you’ve already achieved for yourself. You worked it out by trial and error and now you’re teaching others how to do it.
You develop your course in any spare time you have outside your main gig and build it up gradually.
The next mission is called Monetise Your Audience and it’s medium difficulty.
This one applies when you’re in the happy situation of having a sizable audience and the objective is to make money by creating a course to sell to them.
So maybe you have a popular blog, podcast, or YouTube channel. Or you’re very active on social media and have a large following.
This mission takes all of that hard-earned attention and turns it into money by creating a product you know they’d be keen to buy.
And one of the big benefits of starting out with an audience is you can survey them to learn what specific problems and goals they need help with.
The last mission is Launch Your Startup and its objective is launching a course-based business entirely from scratch.
It’s definitely one of the harder missions and the most likely to need some upfront investment.
If you attempted this one you’d want to do a lot of upfront research to find a profitable market with existing products where you felt you could offer something distinctive.
You’d market test your idea and then build your course over a few iterations to make sure it’s meeting the needs of that market.
When it’s ready for prime time you’d want to scale it up quickly with ads and partner promotions and build a team to support it as you grow.
That’s all far beyond the scope of this programme, but at least you can see what this course creation business looks like at its largest scale.
Okay, those are the seven missions. As I mentioned in the previous lesson, there’s a template for each mission that goes into more detail.
Go take a look at those templates now and I’ll see you in the next lesson!
