As a subject matter expert, there are lots of great reasons for creating a course.

for example, even a simple course can:

☑️ Give you a valuable digital asset to sell over and over

☑️ Boost visibility and credibility in your target market

☑️ Let you delegate aspects of client work to your course

But what if you've always wanted to create a course, but struggle to get started?

Honestly, doing it under your own steam is tough.

But you don't have to go it alone...

Build Your Best Course Academy takes you from idea, via course design and content creation, to your first launch.

Two years in development, and refined using student feedback, it's now ready for primetime.

What's Different about THIS Programme?

Many course creation programmes hype up the earning potential of online courses while downplaying the effort to build and sell one.

However, the creators behind them often spend years growing the following that makes their six-figure launches possible.

In reality, course creation looks a little different for small business owners.

  • Strategic goals (like a less time-hungry business) are more important than chasing short-term profits.

  • Designing and building your course happens in parallel with running your business day-to-day.

  • Marketing your course is more about leveraging your network than tapping a ready-made audience.

That's why my roadmap offers a more realistic and pragmatic approach.

Here are the milestones on your journey:

  1. Clarifying your target market and the problems they face

  2. Crystallising the desirable result your course will deliver

  3. Mapping out the key steps on your unique student journey

  4. Designing a well-paced and balanced curriculum

  5. Building just enough content to run a small “beta” launch

  6. Revising and relaunching a full version of your course

And here are some of the important lessons you’ll learn along the way...

  • 7 “missions” a course can help you achieve (Lesson 2.3)

  • 3 boxes your target market must tick (Lesson 3.4)

  • 4 fundamental results a course can deliver (Lesson 4.2)

  • The “Cascade”: my go-to course mapping tool (Lesson 5.5)

  • The only 3 lesson styles you should consider (Lesson 7.2)

  • Finding people who’ll pay to test your course (Lesson 8.4)

  • Choosing the best course platform for you (Lesson 9.4)

  • Creating a simple sales page that converts (Lesson 10.2)

Each lesson is designed to be as concise and bite-sized as possible, with most lessons being videos of around 5 minutes.

What Additional Resources are Included?

As well as 100+ lessons, assignments and exercises, you also get:

  • Example lesson plans and a handy content revision checklist

  • 20+ ideas practical exercises resources to add to your course

  • Email templates for outreach, student onboarding, etc.

  • A list of recommended platforms and a setup checklist

  • Example sales and sign up pages for inspiration

Who's Behind the Programme?

Hello! I'm Glen Long and I'm the guy behind Build Your Best Course.

I started out working for a 7-figure entrepreneur, building courses that served 1,000+ students and made $1+ million.

After that, I started my own business, mentoring small business owners to create their own digital courses.

And I rolled all of that experience, both as a course creator and a course mentor, into Build Your Best Course.

I'm also a Podia Pro Educator, which means I’m a certified expert and trainer for this popular all-in-one platform.

That said, the Build Your Best Course roadmap is not tied to any one platform — the principles it teaches are universal.

How Does the Support Work?

The self-paced online class is designed to be as “paint by numbers” as possible.

That's so you can make progress even if you only have small pockets of time.

However, most people do even better with extra support and accountability.

That's why the Academy has a built-in community where you can post questions and get feedback directly from me.

"Glen makes it as easy as possible to get you from where you are now to actually creating something that can bring you some income."

another perspective from a recent student...

Build Your Best Course is the full A to Z approach for course creation. It's a meaty course, but it's not this boring slog through the trials and tribulations of instructional design.

Instead, Glen really simplifies everything for you, from ideation to beta testing for your course, to even shooting videos in slide decks. It's a great approach.

Glen is what I'd call a friendly expert. He's super knowledgeable and passionate, but he's also approachable and really entertaining. And that charm, it's threaded throughout the program.

One of the things that I really love about Glen is that he's not afraid to push back. Yes, he's your biggest cheerleader, but if your idea or approach needs strengthening, Glen isn't afraid to tell you, and then help you make it stronger.

He’s not just saying “your idea is fantastic" without giving it a second look. He'll poke holes in it and make sure that it is as strong as it can be.

I can tell you with confidence that the methods in BYBC deliver.

How Do You Know If This Is Right for You?

Build Your Best Course Academy will be a good fit for you if:

  • You already have a rough idea of the topic for your course, usually related to your profession or a passionate side interest.

  • You’ve achieved meaningful results in this area for yourself or others, which many people would love to replicate.

  • You appreciate that creating a course, like writing a book, requires consistent effort over time and the rewards may not be immediate.

  • You understand that no course sells itself, and a big part of making your course successful will be promoting it in the right places.

If this sounds like you, I'd love to invite you into the Academy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions about the programme.

How long will it take to build my course?

Over my years of working with course creators, I've learned that there is no standard time frame for building a course.

Many different factors affect the answer, such as the type of course you’re building and how much time you set aside each week.

That’s why this is a self-paced programme - so it can adapt to your specific situation.

In my experience though, people who are successful set aside at least a couple of hours each week to work on their courses.

It’s realistic to design, build and beta-launch a small-to-medium sized course in around 3 months, working a few hours a week.

What kind of feedback can I get from you?

I find that the right feedback at the right time can make a huge difference to your success.

In fact, I believe getting feedback is one of the most valuable parts of the Academy.

Here are a few examples of how I can help:

  • Helping you clarify your course’s target market and the outcome it will deliver for your customers

  • Reviewing a draft of your course curriculum and giving you expert feedback and suggestions

  • Taking a look at your lesson outline and advising on structure and flow

  • Reviewing your first attempts at creating course content (e.g., a lesson video) and giving tips on how to improve

  • Helping you brainstorm course, module and lesson names

While I won’t review every piece of your course-in-progress, getting feedback on your first efforts across different areas will save you time and dramatically improve your results.

What if I’m not comfortable on camera?

Not every course needs to be a video course.

In fact, Build Your Best Course does not assume a specific content style for your course.

Instead it teaches universal content creation principles and then shows how they apply to three most common types of course content: talking head videos, narrated slide decks, and “blog style” text-based lesson.

In addition, the included mini course Quick Course Videos goes deep on a specific content format that works well even for people who are a little camera shy.

By making a slide deck the focus of each lesson and using a small webcam video in the corner you can get the best of two worlds.

How long does the support element last?

You will have access to support for 6 months from your date of purchase.

After the initial support has expired, you will have the option to extend your support for a further 6 months.

Regardless of the status of your support, you will retain access to the course content (lessons, etc.) for the lifetime of the programme.

Do I have to run a beta launch of my course?

Unless you're creating a smaller course, or the content has been well tested elsewhere, I usually recommend running a "beta" launch with a small group of students to get feedback.

In fact, one of the course modules is dedicated to the process of planning and running an effective beta launch.

After that, you can make some revisions based on the feedback you receive and then relaunch it to a wider audience.

However, not everyone wants to run a beta launch and you can absolutely choose to skip this step.

Will you teach me how to market my course?

The first modules of Build Your Best Course are designed to help you create a clear "promise" for a clear market.

This gives you the best possible foundation when you come to market your course. (No amount of clever marketing can fix a conceptually flawed course.)

However, the right marketing strategy for you will ultimately depend on several factors, including:

  • The type of course you end up building

  • The size of your audience (if you have one)

  • Your budget for promoting your course (if any)

  • Your personality type

Make no mistake: the success of your course depends on getting it in front of the right people.

I'll share tactics for finding and enrolling your first "beta" students. When you're ready for a bigger launch I'll teach you how to build a simple funnel to convert leads into buyers.

But I want to be upfront and say that marketing is not the main focus of this programme.

The focus is on creating a great product that you (or someone that you work with on your marketing) can build a successful promotional strategy around.

What if I don’t have an audience (e.g., Facebook)?

You don't need a big audience to make building an online course worthwhile.

In fact, a small tactical course can be a great way to start building an audience.

However, to sell your course you will need a strategy for getting it into the hands of the right people.

Just like selling services depends on finding people who need those services.

That might mean partnering with somebody who does have an audience who are a good fit for your course.

Or offering your course to people already contacting you about related services (i.e., tapping into your existing pipeline).

Or reaching out to individuals in your extended network to see if they’re interested in your course (or know people who might be.)

But your course won’t attract buyers on its own.

So here’s how I invite you to think about it…

Imagine your course already exists. How would you make your first few sales?

If you’re coming up totally blank, there’s some work to do before you’re ready to build a course.

How's this different to the Online Course Sprint?

The Online Course Sprint is a free "course about courses" I created for anyone thinking about creating an online course.

Its 20 "bitesize" video lessons were designed to set a beginner on the right path.

However, it isn't an execution manual for course creation.

Build Your Best Course Academy is for people who've already decided to create a course and need a detailed roadmap plus support to get it done.

Although the early part of the course covers some of the same ground as the Sprint, BYBC goes much deeper and is based on principles developed or significantly refined since I created the free course.
